Aronson Road and Alkali Creek Trails
Summer 2010
Several years ago a trail was built along Alkali Creek Road as they revamped the roadway from Senators over to Black Pine Road. Unfortunately, one of the most dangerous sections of the Alkali Creek Road for bikers and pedestrians was the section from Airport Road to Black Pine because of the narrow, windy roadway. To top it off, Alkali Creek was eroding the hill supporting the road and drastic measures needed to be taken. Because of limited space and the expense of building a retaining wall to support the roadway, the best solution was to move the creek over to keep it from jeopardizing the integrity of the roadway. In some places they had to move the creek 100 feet from its original pathway. By moving the creek, a buffer area and right of way was created that just happens to be wide enough to accommodate a trail.

Most of this trail will be built as part of the reconstruction of Alkali Creek Road. The last section through the north portion of Swords Park, located on the north side of Alkali Creek Road, will be constructed with phase two of the Swords Park Trail project. The trail will then be connected by the Alkali Creek and Airport Road underpasses and to the trail that was built along Aronson. The trails are making great strides forward to provide connections and a safe route for bikers and pedestrians.
Summer 2009
A new section of Aronson Road has been completed with a trail along the west side of the roadway. Aronson was constructed to connect the Heights to Alkali Creek Road and Airport Road. This trail section will lead to the bike/pedestrian underpasses to Swords Park and eventually to the trail planned for along Alkali Creek. It will also connect to the trail under Main Street and through Earl Guss Park to the existing trail from Mary’s Street down to the riverfront. (See more information under Airport Road.)
