Go Play! Campaign

Go Play! Logo

Go Play! supports building sidewalks, trails, bike lanes and greenways...

Go Play! helps increase the perceived benefits of walking and bicycling...

Go Play! seeks to increase motivation and intention to walk and bicycle...

... because more people walking and biking in the city of Billings will create a community that is healthier, safer and more vibrant for all to live, work, and play.

The Billings Go Play! Campaign was launched in March, 2007 through initial funding from Saint Vincent Healthcare with support from MSU-B, Q2 Television, Strange Sister Creative, and Spotlight Production. The campaign is supported by the Yellowstone City/County Health Department, School District 2 and Yellowstone Valley Council PTA.

The goals of the campaign are to motivate our community, activate our community and educate our community. The "Go Play" message was chosen because it was perceived as a fun, lively and motivating tag-line. The campaign activates the community by promoting and developing events that center on improving health through activity. We then use these events to distribute educational materials on health, fitness and safety provided by the Safe Routes to School Program (Montana Department of Transportation), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the ThinkFirst Program ( a joint cooperative between Saint Vincent Healthcare and the Billings Clinic).  The ThinkFirst program covers bike safety, street safety, and playground safety.  Helmets are sold at the annual Magic City Trail Trek (spring) and at a Saturday Live Booth that coincides with the Saturday Live Fun Run (fall). These are both family fun events centered at promoting health through activity and enjoyment of the Billings Trails and Park system.

The "Go Play" campaign interfaces with other local events and programs that promote walking and biking including:

-- City of Billings Safe Routes to School efforts

-- Billings Bike/Walk/Bus Week (May; 1st Annual, B/W/B Week 2007)

-- Magic City Trail Trek (May; 2007 Trail Trek Report)

-- Heart & Sole Run (June; 2007 Run Report)

-- Saturday Live (September in Pioneer Park; largest school carnival in the region)

-- International Walk to School Day (1st Weds in October; register your school and learn about great ways to make your neighborhood more pedestrian and bicycle friendly year round)

The First Annual Saturday Live Fun Run was held Saturday, September 29, 2007. It was a great success with lots of prizes (Time Out Sports, treats from WIlcoxson's, water bottles from Wendy's, beautiful t-shirts, and more). Poly Elementary School won in the "greatest number of school entries" category and received a gift certificate for frozen treats for the ENTIRE school!!

The 2-mile Fun Run is planned as an annual event to kick off the Saturday Live Celebration in Billings. Saturday Live 2007 Fun Run Registration Form Make sure your school, school staff, friends, and neighbors join us next year to get a great start on the day! Any questions contact race directors Kathy Aragon or Ursula Roberts.

The “Go Play” campaign has also created power point presentations on the economic, health, environmental and safety benefits of pedestrian and bike friendly communities. These power points have been presented to a variety of civic groups and are available upon request.

Go Play! billboards displayed throughout the city focus motorist awareness on their responsibility to share the road with children and adults who are walking and biking. The Go Play! logo and billboard concepts were created by an MSU-Billings Marketing class using local models, and put together with the help of local photographer, Ken Oravsky and graphic artist, Kari McIntyre (Strange Sister Creative).
